The trip on the Thames

London is the capital of Great Britain. The main river in London is the Thames. You can sit on a river boat and see many famous buildings.

You can see Big Ben. It’s a clock tower. Inside the tower there is a heavy metal bell. It sounds every hour. It weighs 13 500 kilos.

River boats go past the London Eye. It’s an enormous wheel. It turns slowly. At the top you can see across the city. The London Eye opened in 2000.

Boats go under Tower Bridge. Sometimes tall ships go up the river. The red light stops the traffic. The bridge opens, the ship passes through and the bridge closes again.

There is the Monument. It tells people about the great fire of London in 1666(sixteen sixty-six). The fire started on Sunday second September in a baker’s shop. It burned hundreds of houses and the old London Bridge. Thousands of people did not have homes. Later builders built a new city.
